Overview

The Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Mechanical) is the theory and practical grounding for a career maintaining aircraft. Training is aligned to the CASA Part 66 Basic Knowledge Syllabus and delivered by engineers who have worked on the aircraft you will be working on.

What you will learn

The qualification covers the mechanical systems an aircraft depends on, from airframe structures and powerplants to hydraulics, fuel and landing gear. Every unit pairs classroom theory with hangar time on live airframes.

Entry requirements

You will need Year 12 or an equivalent qualification, including a pass in mathematics and English. Applicants without Year 12 are assessed individually on their work history and any prior study.

A pre-training review with an enrolment adviser is part of every application. It confirms the course suits you before you commit to it, and it is a conversation rather than a test.

How to enrol

  2. Complete the pre-training review with an adviser.
  3. Accept your offer and pay the enrolment deposit to secure your place.

Places in each intake are limited and are offered in the order applications are completed.

Course structure

Sixteen units of competency across four terms. Each term pairs classroom theory with supervised practical work in the Brisbane hangar.

Full-time study runs approximately ten months. Units are not offered individually: the qualification is delivered as a single programme so the practical work builds on the theory that precedes it.

Your enrolment journey

Here is what to expect from first enquiry all the way through to your offer for the Diploma of Aviation (CPL).

Stage 1 Contact AA or the school Reach out via enquiry form, phone, or chat to express interest.
Stage 2 Speak with the Head of Operations A HOO from either AA or the partner school will get in touch.
Stage 3 Interview A short interview in person or via Teams.
Stage 4 Simulator session A brief simulator session may be required by the school.
Stage 5 Aptitude test Complete an aptitude test to confirm suitability for the program.
Stage 6 Suitability review The HOO discusses your results with the AA team.
Stage 7 Offer made If suitable, a formal offer is made and enrolment begins.

Delivered at Aviation Australia Brisbane

Training runs from the Brisbane campus at Brisbane Airport, where the hangar holds the airframes and engines you will work on. The teaching staff are licensed engineers, and the workshops are set up the way a maintenance organisation sets up a line.

Students split their week between the classroom and the hangar floor from the first term rather than waiting until the theory is finished.
