Overview

This qualification covers the mechanical systems an aircraft maintenance engineer works on every day, from airframe structures to powerplant and landing gear.

Training is delivered on campus by engineers who have worked the trade, in workshops fitted with the equipment used on the line.

Entry requirements

Year 12 or equivalent, including a pass in mathematics and English. Applicants without Year 12 may be assessed on relevant work experience.

How to enrol

Apply online, then complete a pre-training review with an enrolment adviser. Places are confirmed once the review is signed off and the first instalment is paid.

Course structure

Sixteen units across four terms, each term pairing classroom theory with a workshop block.

Am I eligible for funding for my studies from the Queensland Government?

Permanent residents of Queensland who have the right to study full time may be eligible for the funding scheme applicable for this course.

Evidence of Australian and Queensland residency is required to be provided prior to enrolment. This can be a valid Australian Passport, an Australian Birth Certificate, or an International Passport with accompanying Visa Grant Notification/VEVO documentation, and a valid Queensland Drivers Licence and/or a valid QLD Adult Proof of Age Card (18+ card).

Will I receive my Certificate IV after completing the course?

After completing the course, you will receive a Record of Results, which covers the theory components of part of your Certificate IV in Aeroskills. You will also receive a CASR Part 147 Certificate of Recognition for all CASR Part 66 basic knowledge examinations you have passed at 75% or over.

The remaining components of the qualification must be completed on-the-job in an apprenticeship. This includes practical training, and also may include some additional theory training. Once you have successfully completed all components of your apprenticeship, you can be issued with your Certificate IV qualification.

What are the class hours?

Class hours typically range from 7:30am to 3:30pm with an earlier finish on Fridays. Once enrolled, your Enrolment Confirmation will detail your course hours.

Do I need to purchase any equipment or clothing in preparation for my course?

Yes, as you are entering a professional aviation environment, specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and attire are required for safety and industry alignment:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): While Aviation Australia provides essential safety gear, students are generally required to provide their own AS/NZS 2210.3 compliant steel-capped safety boots.
  • Professional Standards: In our classrooms and and hangar environments, you will be expected to wear trade dress (trade pants and a trade shirt in navy) and maintain professional grooming standards that reflect aviation industry requirements.
  • Stationery & Tech: You will need basic stationery and a personal laptop or tablet capable of accessing our online learning management system (LMS).
  • Detailed List: A comprehensive “Required Equipment List” will be discussed during your interview and provided in your induction pack. This ensures you have ample time to source the correct items before your first day of training.
