Overview
Recognition of Prior Learning is the route to a CASR Part 66 licence for engineers who already do the work. Aviation Australia assesses the evidence you hold against the licence sub-category you are applying for, and awards credit for what it covers.
The assessment is a paper exercise first and a conversation second. Most applicants finish it without attending a campus.
Evidence guide
Bring the documents that show what you have done, not what you have been taught.
- A logbook or maintenance record covering the systems in the sub-category.
- Certificates of training, with the syllabus for each one where you have it.
- A signed statement of service from each employer, on letterhead.
- Any overseas licence or authorisation, with a certified translation.
An assessor will tell you what is missing before you pay for anything.
How to enrol
Choose the sub-category you are applying for, submit the initial RPL report, and an assessor is assigned within five working days.
Applications are taken all year — there is no intake to wait for.

The licence sub-categories Aviation Australia assesses against:
- B1.1 — aeroplane turbine.
- B1.2 — aeroplane piston.
- B1.3 — helicopter turbine.
- B1.4 — helicopter piston.
