Study Aviation in Australia to be globally recognised

Make Australia your home while you study

Studying in Australia is about more than gaining a qualification. It’s an opportunity to experience a new country, meet people from around the world and build independence while preparing for your future in aviation.

Australia is home to a diverse, multicultural community and offers international students a high-quality study experience alongside an enviable lifestyle. From vibrant cities and beaches to unique landscapes and wildlife, there’s plenty to discover beyond the classroom.

At Aviation Australia, we want you to feel prepared for your move and confident about settling into life here. From planning your budget and finding accommodation to setting up your banking and bringing your family, here are some of the essentials to consider before you arrive.

Prepare for life in Australia

Understanding what it may cost to live in Australia will help you plan with confidence. Your expenses will depend on where you live, your accommodation, transport and lifestyle. Along with your regular living expenses, remember to allow for additional costs when you first arrive, such as an accommodation bond, household essentials, transport and study materials.

The Australian Government’s Study Australia website provides a Cost of Living Calculator to help international students estimate expenses based on accommodation, transport and lifestyle choices. Study Australia notes that its calculator provides an approximate guide, while Home Affairs separately sets minimum financial-capacity requirements for Student visa purposes.

Setting up your banking

Once you arrive, opening an Australian bank account can make it easier to manage everyday expenses, receive payments and access your money.

Australia has a wide choice of banks and financial institutions, so take some time to compare accounts, fees and services to find an option that suits you. International students may also be eligible for accounts or services designed specifically for students.

Homestay

For students looking for additional support when they first arrive, Aviation Australia recommends considering homestay accommodation for your first four weeks.

Services such as Australian Homestay Network can help students explore available homestay options. Current availability, services and pricing should always be confirmed directly with the accommodation provider.

Student accommodation

Purpose-built student accommodation and private rental options are also available across many of Aviation Australia’s study locations.

Costs, inclusions, availability and proximity to your training location can vary, so we recommend researching your options early and considering transport as part of your decision.

Planning your move together

For some international students, studying in Australia also means relocating with a partner or children. Depending on your circumstances and visa, eligible family members may be able to be included in your Student visa application or apply later as subsequent entrants.

Home Affairs defines eligible Student visa family members as a partner or an unmarried dependent child under 18, subject to the relevant requirements. Existing family members generally need to be declared when the original Student visa application is lodged, even if they do not initially travel with you.

If your family will join you, it’s important to plan for the additional costs of accommodation, living expenses, health cover, travel and schooling. Home Affairs also requires Overseas Student Health Cover for the student and accompanying dependants, subject to limited country-specific exceptions.

Visa requirements and financial thresholds can change, so always check the latest Australian Government information when planning your move.

Get ready for your Australian adventure

There’s a lot to think about when moving to another country, but preparing early can make your arrival much easier. Before you leave home, take some time to organise your visa and travel documents, accommodation, health cover, finances and transport from the airport, and make sure you understand what you’ll need to come and study.
